Nalanda West is honored to present a weekend retreat with Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche June 23-24, 2012. Rinpoche will be teaching on Ngulchu Thogme's Thirty-Seven Practices of the Bodhisattva, a set of pithy verses that distill Shantideva’s Way of the Bodhisattva, one of the most revered texts in the Buddhist canon. As Rinpoche notes, “Teachings on the bodhisattva’s way of life are among the most profound Buddhist teachings because they emphasize getting rid of our ego-clinging. We have a tremendous history of ego-clinging; we’ve been perpetuating the same habits over eons.”

Born into a noble Tibetan family, Dzigar Kongtrül Rinpoche's father was the 3rd incarnation of the great tertön Chogyur Lingpa, and his mother was a great and renowned practitioner. At the age of nine, Rinpoche was recognized as an incarnation of Jamgon Kongtrül Lodro Thaye by Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa. Raised in a monastic environment, Rinpoche received the teachings of the Nyingma lineage from his root teacher, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Rinpoche also studied extensively under Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, Nyöshul Khen Rinpoche, and Khenpo Rinchen.

Rinpoche moved to the United States in 1989, taught Buddhist philosophy for five years at Naropa University, and founded Mangala Shri Bhuti, an organization for Buddhist studies and practice. He has established a number of centers, including a mountain retreat center in southern Colorado, where he spends much of his time in retreat and guides his students in long-term retreat practice. When not in retreat, he travels widely, teaching throughout the world, and has authored several books, including It's Up To You and his most recent, Light Comes Through.
