Practice Day
We have a community practice on one Sunday every month. This is a great opportunity to practice meditation and connect with others. There is a guided meditation session focusing on a particular shamatha (calm abiding) practice, loving-kindness practice and some basic yoga stretches. Sometimes we might have video talks or some other special sessions. We will send an announcement every month that outlines the schedule. This program is open to everyone. Practice Days are scheduled for the following Sundays: August 29, September 26, and October 31 from 12:00 noon - 2:45 pm.
New Articles from Acharya Lhakpa
Great teachings from NBNY's resident teacher's blog. Just added:
1. Reflections about being a Buddhist in NYC 2010
...Decades ago, scientists had a dream to develop technologies that would do our work for us. So we could do things easily and rest more. Now we have these things...Do we think we are resting more?
2. Filling the Potholes on the Highway of the 3 Yanas
...we often miss the basic things that are important for being a practitioner. One would not be successful on the path without renouncing the ten non-virtues...
Message from DPR Regarding the Earthquake in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu
We know that you are all aware of the suffering taking place in China's Qinghai province -- an area bordering Tibet – due to the earthquake. We would like to collectively voice our concerns, our sorrow, and our support for those in need. There are many ways for us all to help, including reciting the Heart Sutra as suggested by Ponlop Rinpoche, engaging in tonglen, making aspirations, and making donations. Many of us have our own charities we give to, but here is a link to a webpage that provides easy access to several charitable organizations: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/14/china-earthquake-qinghai_n_537493.html.

Letter from Rinpoche
December 21, 2009
Dear Sangha Friends,
I recently had the great fortune to visit and spend time with my guru Khenpo Rinpoche at Tek Chok Ling in Kathmandu, Nepal. Rinpoche is doing very well and he is cheerful and happy to see students and give teachings. I, along with six other students arrived in Kathmandu on November 16. We had daily audiences with Rinpoche in the morning and received profound instructions in doha form.

Buddhism in the Prison System
Mind Without Borders provides inmates the possibility of studying the Buddhadharma through Nalandabodhi curriculum correspondence courses. This provides a structure around which communication with the inmate can develop. We provide dharma pen pals as well, and have provided PIs for motivated prisoners who are serious about developing a structured meditation path.
